Streaming sites besides Youtube not working for me

You need to "Enable MPV's support for streaming sites" in preferences -> network.

Hi, the culprit is the line '--ytdl-format=bestvideo+bestaudio' in Options > Preferences > Adavanced > Options for Mplayer/Mpv . Remove this and streaming would work for other sites. e.g http://vimeo.com/117910068

Without it, however, 1080p Dash videos on Youtube would not work (only 720p)

OK, never mind. It *is* an mpv option, but I had mpv built without lua support. Turns out, lua is needed for youtube-dl support.

I had to also rebuild ffmpeg with openssl support, otherwise https://youtube doesn't work.
