How is bluray support supposed to work?

I'm using Debian 7 (wheezy) and installed mplayer from wheezy-backports. I install smplayer by downloading the tarball from sourceforge and building a .deb file. No matter what I set -alang to, my copy of "Forbidden Planet" always starts in Spanish. So, I figured SMplayer would be helpful. Unfortunately, when I click Open->Disc->Blu-ray_from_drive, nothing actually happens. The first time I do it, a dialog to set the correct device name pops up, but after that, nothing. What am I doing wrong?

Send the mplayer log (options -> view logs) after trying to play the bluray.
