SMplayer 14 (latest)/SMTube on Pentium III - not usable

Problems, bugs, suggestions... anything related to SMPlayer.

SMplayer sound works on a Thinkpad T23 (but not on the DELL 8100 unless I delete smplayer.ini each time)

480p webm works, 480p flv displays as 240p.

Is it possible to use smtube CLI? X uses 44% of cpu power at 1.13GHz.

I can edit smtube mplayer by adding -vo fbdev, start a video, ctrl-alt-backspace to kill X and keep watching, but I lose the controls and only Ctrl-C quits. 720p is still too fast - sound goes out of sync, but video displays properly without sound (full screen with the sides cut off a bit, at 1024) using youtube-dl and mplayer -nosound. without X running. With X, it is jerky.

youtube-viewer used to work on a 266MHz laptop at 240p (144p?) without X. Eventually someone will make a new package for puppy linux.

I gave seven laptops 266-800 MHz to my 10 year old neighbor's friends, who want youtube working on them again. They do not have the patience to search for a URL, type it after youtube-dl, start a download then switch terminals to watch with mplayer. Or the skill to use the kill-X method.

I should look for an smtube forum. SMplayer is working well now at least on one laptop.

smtube resets itself to default smplayer every time I kill X.

On DELL 8100 Smplayer has no sound unless I delete smplayer.ini

On Thinkpad T23 Smplayer has sound but no toolbars. (Keyboard controls still work). I don't recall if toolbars were always missing. I had made lots of experiments with resolutions and switching mplayer/smplayer but sound
was always working (except maybe once with mplayer).

So I deleted smplayer.ini on T23 to see if that would fix it. Restart smplayer, has toolbars, but sound for only 1 sec.
I put back the previous smplayer.ini and have sound but no toolbars again. This ini has audio_output=oss and
the non-working one has a blank, but adding oss did not help. I am using ALSA sound on a 14 year old laptop.

Anyway I now have sound working on both laptops but no GUI controls, one with mplayer and one with smplayer and no toolbars. Not the best for 10 year olds.

DELL Latitude C400 (2001) 866MHz Pentium III. SMplayer/SMtube work (sort of) with XP and added SSL libraries (latest smplayer).

Puppy Linux Wary 5 (5.10?) with glibc updated to 2.11 from 2.10, as required by some library needed by smtube.
(Puppy 4.1.2 with updated glibc still won't work with Smplayer - no play).

Smplayer and smtube work at 360p. 480p out of synch. Both sound and toolbars work with smplayer.

The 10 year old neighbor ran off with the laptop before I could check cpu usage. He will bring back the 650MHz to add Youtube (360p)
He traded me back my ASUS EEEPC 901 with puppeee to try smtube with.

C400 has i810 sound like the Thinkpad T23 (where the auto-generated smplayer.ini lost its toolbar). Linux installed via an exe since no CD, floppy or USB boot. I have not tried Wary 5.10 on other laptops. It may work better with older sound chips than Wary 5.5.

I copied the smplayer.ini file that was generated automatically on the C400 to DELL Inspiron 8100. Sound and toolbar both work now.

So two of three Pentium IIIs from 2001-2002 have some bug that generates bad smplayer.ini files. T23 with no toolbar and OSS sound, 8100 with toolbar and no sound after the ini file is generated. Should I be reporting bugs? Figuring out why sound or toolbar are missing in the ini's?

If you send that ini I'll take a look at it.

http://keesan.freeshell.org/smplayer.ini-8100-nosound - toolbar but no sound after first video, unless I delete this file (smplayer.ini)
http://keesan.freeshell.org/smplayer.ini-t23-works - sound but no toolbar (I think)
http://keesan.freeshell.org/smplayer.in ... oses-sound - 1 sec of sound , with toolbar
http://keesan.freeshell.org/smplayer.ini-c400-sound - it all works.

These files were automatically created when I first started smtube, but I changed resolutions repeatedly.
several pages each

DELL LATITUDE cu400 Wary Puppy Linux 5.10 i810 sound 866MHz
IBM THINKPAD t23 newer linuxes including Wary 5.5 i810 sound 1.13GHz
DELL INSPIRON 8100 ditto, maestro 3 sound, 1.0GHz

All Pentium III, 512 MB.

Have not yet tried a 900MHz Toshiba Pentium III (or several Pentium IIs).

The kid says he can manage without toolbars. I was able to flip a backwards youtube video.

I tried smplayer on the Thinkpad T23 with a DVD.

Had to change the drive (read CDs not DVDs). Found my box of Thinkpad parts (including English-language keyboard with full set of keys, and floppy drive from a T20). With working DVD drive smplayer played the DVD with good sound but completely scrambled video. Wavy horizontal lines in color.

Mplayer alone (mplayer dvd://) plays the DVD perfectly, as does OGLE.

Mplayer Preferences.

Audio
Changed OSS to ALSA (smplayer.ini had output OSS). OSS had worked too.

Video
Changed xv to "x11 (slower)". Now works perfectly.
Maybe x11 should be the default if oss is the default, for older hardware? I will try also fbdev with Youtube.

Why does xv work with Youtube and not with a DVD?

DVDs can be played at 500MHz with -framedrop or maybe -hardframedrop for mplayer.

I can't download the ini files ("You don't have permission to access the file on this server").

Anyway, about the problem with the sound I suggest to try other audio outputs in preferences -> general -> audio. Maybe the default one doesn't work correctly in your computer.

About the toolbars, I don't know why they are disabled, but you can turn them on with F5 and F6.

x11 is very slow. On slow computers is better to use xv. However it can be buggy sometimes, although maybe the problem can actually be caused by the drivers of the graphic card. If you have good drivers you can try gl instead.
