SMplayer sound works on a Thinkpad T23 (but not on the DELL 8100 unless I delete smplayer.ini each time)
480p webm works, 480p flv displays as 240p.
Is it possible to use smtube CLI? X uses 44% of cpu power at 1.13GHz.
I can edit smtube mplayer by adding -vo fbdev, start a video, ctrl-alt-backspace to kill X and keep watching, but I lose the controls and only Ctrl-C quits. 720p is still too fast - sound goes out of sync, but video displays properly without sound (full screen with the sides cut off a bit, at 1024) using youtube-dl and mplayer -nosound. without X running. With X, it is jerky.
youtube-viewer used to work on a 266MHz laptop at 240p (144p?) without X. Eventually someone will make a new package for puppy linux.
I gave seven laptops 266-800 MHz to my 10 year old neighbor's friends, who want youtube working on them again. They do not have the patience to search for a URL, type it after youtube-dl, start a download then switch terminals to watch with mplayer. Or the skill to use the kill-X method.
I should look for an smtube forum. SMplayer is working well now at least on one laptop.
smtube resets itself to default smplayer every time I kill X.
