I tried an experiment and built smplayer against Qt 5, but then it would not accept the URL that smtube passed it. Some testers did not like smtube built against Qt 5 either, the way upstream Debian and Ubuntu have it, so reverted it to Qt 4 also.

Be sure you are using the very latest version of SMPlayer from the SVN. There was a bug that prevented SMPlayer (when built with Qt 5) to play Youtube URLs.
