I'm using mpv 0.13 and the very latest version of youtube-dl and with the option --ytdl-format=bestvideo+bestaudio/best the youtube videos does play at 1080p for me.
Vimeo also works.

Maybe some changes in ffmpeg? Which version are you using?

It works now. Forgot to go to Preferences > Network to uncheck enable internal youtube support and enable MPV streaming.
