I don't know, but try to select a different audio driver (preferences -> general -> audio).

I'v tracked this issue to occur when option "Use software volume controll" is enabled. It occurs even when I run mplayer from command line, although video won't stop, just get choppy. So it seems to be issue of mplayer rather than smplayer. Anyway thank you for your time and sorry for bothering.
