Playing/ streaming from TV channals

Is it possible to stream from a TV channel via SMPlayer and if so how is this done please:- Step by Step

If you mean send the video from SMPlayer to another device via streaming, I'm afraid it's not possible.

I would like to use SMPlayer to watch/stream a TV programme from a either BBC, ITV or Channel 4 (4oD) if this possible.

It's possible to watch TV channels from a dvb-t device for example. But SMPlayer doesn't provide any function to configure or scan for channels, it has to be done with another application.

There's a document /usr/share/doc/smplayer/Watching_TV.txt.gz that tries to explain it.

It's also possible to play online streams, if you know the URL of a channel stream (usually a URL ending with .m3u8) you can open it in SMPlayer with Open -> URL.

You're using MPlayer2 which is obsolete. I suggest to replace it with mpv.

That video can't be played because the URL is a web page, not the URL of a video. Sometimes mpv with the help of youtube-dl can find out the real URL of a video from a web page but unfortunately it seems that itv.com is not supported by youtube-dl.

This is the list of supported sites by youtube-dl: https://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/supportedsites.html

If you install mpv and a very recent version of youtube-dl you can play videos from all those sites with smplayer.
