ugly picture with smplayer+software x264 decoder

Hi,

I noticed, that when I have smplayer set to use xv output (as opposed to vdpau) the image in HD videos look way worse. I also noticed that the image is ok when I start mplayer manually from command line just with -vo xv parameter. Comparisons:

http://i.imgur.com/ggAUg.png - that's from smplayer.

The second one's all blurry and blocky, especially the background. Any suggestions?

h264 video often looks worse with postprocessing filters on.

Here you can see how PP can RUIN a high quality video, while consuming more CPU!




Edit: Ugh, imgur automatically converted the high quality picture to jpeg, introducing artifacts. Well, even with the artifacts you can see that the detail is completely washed out by the postprocessing filters, and I can assure you that the non-processed version looks spectacular.

I hope this solves your problem. I now default mplayer to not use any post-processing, and manually add it in only for low bitrate video, and NEVER for h264 encodes.
