A question about MPV vs. Mplayer

A curious situation. I was attempting to watch a video using SMPlayer with MPV and the video kept going out of sync with the audio, as if the MPV engine was struggling to display the video on my old machine. Finally, out of desperation, I changed from MPV to Mplayer and the video played fine, no out-of-sync problems, no video slowdowns at all. I made no other changes in settings at all. Just wondering what might be going on here. Is Mplayer better than MPV at handling the limitations of an old machine, or what?

In my old computer I noticed that mplayer works better with 1080p videos. Other than that I didn't notice a significance difference of performance.
