Can't map keys 9, 0, *, # to control pause ect.

Hi all,
I'm new to the forum but not smplay or mplayer. Best players out there!

I have an xp service pack 3 hp netbook and a vista desktop. Have smplayer on
both. Have a linux puppy box also.
I also have a gyration media center remote and have been trying to map the
number keys and the * and sharp keys to control pause/play, previous track
and next track.
I've found that I can't map anything above the 8 key. It will work for the
1,2,3,4,5,6,7 or 8 keys. But just ignores the 9,0,*and # keys.
I want to keep the default functions of the lower keys.

What am i not getting here?

BTW, The 9,0,*and # keys will not map on the keyboard either.
