mkv is choppy on laptop

hey guys i have a laptop with the following specs; Intel Core i5-430M Intel HD Graphics 6gb.
i am using linux mint 18.3 cinnamon.

when i play a mkv file the playback is choppy i would think my specs are fine. i am a noob on linux so meaby i am doing something wrong.

Try enabling hardware decoding in preferences -> performance, or selecting a different video output in preferences -> general -> video.
