Well, it's a pity it doesn't work. I think it's a bug in Qt. (It works fine on Windows with Qt 5.6). I can only try to find workarounds for the problem but that may not work with all versions of Qt 5.

I also think it works fine with Qt 4.

Here's a quwirk - When I "Send video to screen" via menu it continues to work as expected - back and forth. When I set up a keyboard shortcut, it' back to sending the video to it's own (separate) window on the primary screen. I can send it to the second, and then use the menu and return it the the smplayer window.

It's not seriously an issue for me - just say'n it happens.
