Is this possible: display video with play controls on laptop screen and video only fullscreen on external monitor? Thank you

Yes. Menu Video -> Send video to screen.

Thank you, but have you actually tried this? On my laptop, it sends the video to the external display, but removes the video from the laptop display. Window with controls still on laptop screen, but the only thing that shows inside the window is a miniature monitor icon with the message "video is sent to an external screen."

That's the intended behaviour.

I don't think it's possible to display the video on both screens, but the controls on only one.
