I use it with no problem.
You can even use different versions of mplayer and just change the one you want to use in smplayer options (Options / General / Mplayer Executable), but remember to use the relative path to smplayer version, e.g.: \MPlayer-p4-svn-32848\mplayer.exe and not the full-path.
This assumes you extracted the latest version in smplayer folder \ MPlayer-p4-svn-32848
I used it like that because all versions do have bugs and so I can try other versions.
I would also suggest you use the smplayer portable version from which detects the path to smplayer and launches the program with the suitable path option: -config-path.
For mplayer version I'd suggest the rtm version (detects the processor type) if you run it on different pc-s with different processors types (the one in the example up here is the version optimized for P4 processors).
