As I know, IGP and nvidia card will not work together under linux in common PC or NB.
even in some special hardware, for example dualhead IBM pos, it requires special BIOS and X server, and each of them have their own screen.

And forget the question about dual nVidia GPUs in the same system.

But in general, if smplayer takes the responsibility of quering the VDPAU decoder for certain capabilities, shouldn't it go all the way? -> ie -> Before that, query the GPU driver if it is VDPAU capable at all, and if it is not, not allowing VDPAU selection as output at all.

This would be the more "final", complete and proper solution.

Which brings us to my previous point:

There are responsibilities of mplayer and not smplayer.
