File Association - Win 7

Postby Paparazzi » Wed Mar 03, 2010 8:33 am

Hi,
Just got Win 7 installed for my cousin and try as I might, I just can't get files types associated with SMPlayer. Every time I try to associate, I get some kind of message about rights and admin ... just have no clue what to do. Yes, I could go to the control panel and change the associations one by one, but that's such a pain .. I mean, choosing one type, changing the association and moving on to the next one for all those types SMPlayer plays :( If it could be done from with the player like it was on XP, that would be great!

Oh! by the way, when I set associations through Irfan View for all the pictures, it does so without giving me any of the messages I get with SMPlayer and best of all the association stays.

Can something be done about this?

Thanks :)

Try changing them in Default Programs, under "Set your default programs". SMPlayer is listed there. I didn't have any issue setting associations either through Default Programs under SMPlayer or in SMPlayer in Windows 7 (my account also is a non-administrator).

This is a snip of the message I get when I try to associate from within SMPlayer.

I could do it from within Default Programs, under "Set your default programs", but the problem there is that I got to go type by type and change the default for each one separately ... which is really troublesome.

The PC I'm using is my home PC and so, I'm the admin and the sole user.

Cheers.

I'm talking about this, it's no more troublesome or different than SMPlayer's GUI. Does setting it this way still work, or does it occur when setting any one specific file type (because if the installer forgot to add one it might not work in Vista/7)?

Sorry for the delay ... just got around to checking.

Ok! so, I do not see SMPlayer in the Set Association ... I think that this has to do with mine being a portable version. Although portable, I was able to associate from within the program while I used XP. Now, SMPlayer does not even appear in that list. I therefore have to go to a type ... avi for instance and change the association for that type manually and then move to the next type!

Any idea why I get that other message "Not All files could be associated. Please check your security permissions and retry."?

Thanks for your assistance so far, redxii :)

Which package did you install SMPlayer with? If you're using the portable version, the portable version doesn't have the file association settings (they would be absent from the Preferences). Maybe you used the one without MPlayer, or from a different website that includes SMPlayer?

smplayer-0.6.9-win32.exe is the one I use (and created). It creates the registry entries to appear in Default Programs, and if they're absent apparently file associations won't work in Vista/7 and produce that error message.

Ah Redxii, that explains it!
I normally download the package created by you, install it on my office pc. I then copy the contents of that folder to another location, uninstall the original, and then use this relocated files on all my home PCs and laptops! This way, I keep all the settings in the ini file and get to associate the files.

I guess I'll just download it again and install it on my home PC with Win 7.

Thanks once again :)
