There's an option in preferences -> advanced -> logs which allows to save the smplayer log to a file.

Not sure whether this is am SMPlayer or Mplayer question, but h264 mp4 playback is jerky on my Windows 2003 Pentium 4 system using 'SMPlayer Version: 0.6.9+SVN-r3607, Using Qt 4.7.3 (compiled with Qt 4.7.3), Using MPlayer SVN r33574.'

Playback is fine in Media Player Classic, not in Windows Media Player.

SMPlayer options are pretty vanilla at the moment. Any advice on optimising for h264?

All h264 files have same problem, no xvid/divx avi files have any problems. Details for one of the h264 mp4s is given below.

MPlayer Windows builds are a crapshoot, some builds always have bugs or quirks, people want new features though like Hi10p. With either MPlayer2 or the newest Sherpya builds I have noticed (decrypted) Blu-ray movie files don't play very well, my machine is fast enough and older versions played them fine.

Thanks for the pointer, old mate, but my reply right now will be brief and vulgar.

The Windows build fracked my SMPlayer config completely, and all my attempts to roll back, including complete uninstall and re-install, have given me nothing better than what I started with before things got better two days ago. Yes, yes, I can hear all you unix/linux nerds snickering at one of the wintel crowd, but it's enough to make me reach for the 18-year-old whiskey. I thought I knew something about windows porting, but I need to go back to skool.

Haven't given up just yet though, but I will be exploring alternatives to SMPlayer if there's really no no Windows guys out there to share experiences.

Uninstalling doesn't remove your settings, delete the .smplayer folder: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/s ... on_file.3F

I get the same DRI failure, if you have decoding threads higher than 1. I haven't noticed any problems playing videos that produce an endless DRI Failure message.

Also try disabling 'Draw video using slices' in General -> Video.\

You haven't tried the other versions yet?

The best way to describe what I've managed to get to work is what a friend suggested: 'that's some weird voodoo shit.' I over-installed the latest version (without uninstalling it) with the following version: 0.6.9 (SVN r3447), using MPlayer SVN r30369. The reason I think this is weird is that I'm pretty sure that version had substantial issues with audio track displacement. However, right now it's rendering even my most obnoxious h264 acceptably.

I don't understand at all what's changed, but while it works I think I'll leave it be and go with the voodoo explanation.

I have also deselected the draw in slices option, as suggested, and will watch a few movies without, then with it selected to consider whether it makes a major difference. Right now I can't really tell.

Thanks, redxii, for your help. BTW, during my fiddling around, I tried out VLC that seems to get a lot of mentions, but I thought it was an awful program. As was the Divx player (commercial software). SMPlayer and my av collection are gonna be friends for some time to come yet.
