video playback in mplayer but not smplayer

Hi, recently I downloaded some .mkv files to play in the smplayer gui and it always gives a crash error (Exit code 1) but whenever I open them in mplayer (without using smplayer) they play just fine. Is there something I need to do in order to get the .mkv files affected to play from within smplayer?
