Is there an adequate FAQ on SM Player

Postby HeavyMetal » Tue Mar 27, 2012 7:56 pm

Hello,
My question is in the ropic - try to find a normal FAQ on SM player. The one which would explain menu settings (which do not seeem to change with time at all...)
Like, what is that quality number (1 to 6) on video page? What about the filters on same page? Cache, how to configure it better? Etc, almost all options say nothing if you just read them. And no explanations on them, how can you set up the player?
SM PLayer doesn't work good even on quite ok machine now. Media Player Classic works flawless, SM player always tears picture or slows down or something else. I only stick to it because of it's keyboard key usage functionality. Otherwise - little settings which say nothing and also seem to do nothing and pretty poor perfomance after all. Why not making normal FAQ and tell people what those settings mean, and how to configure them so player actually play. Smooth.
Also, if there's any particular codec pack is recommended, would be nice to know too.
Just want to know what all those settings mean.
Thanks

Go to Preferences -> General -> Video and try another video output, direct3d for instance, and see if it works better.

I tried to follow the log and added some -cache 8192 parameter, which seemed to help. Tried other things too but looks like cache was the best goal. Also, changed the output to Open GL (ATI)...

However, thing is that I just want to set up SM player to work ok. Even though it seem to work better it is still does not perform as good as MPC. I talk about picture quality, I actually posted it here long ago...

What all those filters - Lowpass5, Yadif, and so on? The "quality" field - which is better, 1 or 6?? Such easy questions, but how to know the answer. I have no idea about those settings, do they supposed to be understood without explanation. Sorry, rvm, I do not know if you are the person who wrote SM Gui. The one who did knew why all those options are - so why not tell users about it? That cache - if there were some explanation on how to improve performance by adjusting it, I might just do it and do not post here. That's what I am talking about, some FAQ with ALL setting explanations. Watching HD movies on huge monitor, you want to make them look good. Especially on powerful machine. Look best, not just run without tearing...

If the source is good, I think the best is to use no filter at all. Filters like deblock or denoise may help with videos with bad picture, to hide a little bit the artifacts in the image.

Deinterlacers (like yadif, etc.) are only needed if the image is interlaced (you can see thin lines where there's movement). Yadif may be the best but it uses a lot of CPU. I sometimes prefer to use Lowpass5.

The cache option is a little bit strange. Sometimes helps to increase it, but with some formats it can cause problems.

Thanks...

That postprocessing thing... is the highest number means the best quality (6 in SM Player)?..

Anyway, seem to work better now, but caches every video before starting, kind of annoying especially having a decent machine. Helped - but is that really necessary?!

I wonder if anyone asked about it already, and some kind of explanation on best settings for files playback does exist somewhere. I post here because I got here from sourceforge page but maybe that's not the best place to look for FAQ and this sort of things?
