MP4 problem

Hello,
I am running XP pro, and I can't play mp4 files with SMPlayer.
SMPlayer has built-in support for this, it is claimed.
Does anyone know what the cause(s) of this problem could be?

I can player mp4 files in windows xp without problems. Please send the mplayer log (options -> view logs) after trying to play a mp4 file.

mplayer can't initialize the video driver (directx). Go to preferences -> general -> video and select another one.

It works well with wmp and ffdshow. I'd rather use SMPlayer.

With any of the other codecs in SMPlayer, it doesn't work well. CPU is 100%, my computer is a bit old.
